Student lead safety initiatives have become more common in the last three decades on university campuses, exemplified by the rapid growth in Safewalk intiatives. Students are often better equipped to recognize the safety concerns of other students than university administration Therefore, there is a role for student safety initiatives that complement the roles of university and policing programs. This talk discusses challenges, successes, and possible future directions of safety programs designed, run, and directed by students. The presenter, Collin Horn, is the current Safewalk Specialist at the University of Alberta Students’ union.
