Hayley Todesco

For a high school science project, Hayley tried to break down the most difficult pollution found in the oil sands tailings ponds by designing a sand-based bioreactor. After two years of trial and error, her prototypes worked fourteen times faster than conventional methods and could potentially clean all of Alberta’s tailings pond waste in decades instead of centuries. For her work, Hayley won the 2014 Google Science Fair's Senior Age Category, the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, and Canada's 2015 Top 20 Under 20 Award. She is currently an undergraduate studying molecular genetics at the University of Alberta. Twitter: Haylequinn
